Before the Move
- If you are able to influence your move date, avoid peak times.
Typically, these are at the end of each month but especially the last Friday of every month. - Consider the items that are stored in your loft, garage and garden when planning your move.
- Decide which fixtures and fittings you will be taking with you. Also consider how you will disconnect and reconnect any appliances you plan to take with you.
- Plan how you will pack your possessions. Will you require any items from Atlas such as protective bubble-wrap or boxes?
- Do you require a split delivery? Consider if you will need any items delivered elsewhere e.g. if furniture is being stored or given to relatives.
- Is there anything you need to consider about the house you are moving into? For example, is there a burglar alarm you need to learn to set, or need a code for? Or are there any instructions for operating the heating or do you know where the stop cock is?
- Do you need baskets to transport your pets? You may only have one basket but several cats to move on the same day.
- Think about childcare. Are your children old enough to help on the day or would it be easier to organise childcare?
In the Days before the Move
- Label boxes carefully when packing.
Label the box with the name of the room that it should be delivered to. This can save hours when you come to unpack. - Highlight any boxes that contain important items.
Put an asterisk or other marker on the boxes that need to be unpacked first. - Consider how you pack things from the garage or shed.
Tape any rakes, brushes or poles together to make them easier to transport. - Empty your fridge of all goods.
- It is adviseable to empty your freezer.
It is not however, absolutely essential that you do this. The freezer will be switched off for some time and will also need to remain off for at least two hours after the move. - Electrical applicances such as dishwashers, cookers and washing machines need to be disconnected ready for the move.
- Clothes do not need to be packed. Atlas will transfer these into wardrobe cartons on the move day.
On the Move Day
- Any plants being moved should be wrapped in newspaper to protect them.
- Have you packed a box of essential items in your car for when you arrive? An umbrella in case of rain, a camera, bottle of champagne or everything you need to make yourself a cup of tea.
